Facebook is adding a \’Dislike\’ button

16/09/2015 by Myles Harris

A Facebook \’dislike\’ button. We\’ve all wanted it at some point. An annoying post, an insensitive one. Now we may actually get one.

A Facebook \’dislike\’ button. We\’ve all wanted it at some point. An annoying post, an insensitive one. Now we may actually get one.

This morning during Facebook\’s Q&A, Mark Zuckerberg announced:

I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.

As Mark Zukerberg says below, he does not want Facebook to get into a up/down vote scenario. He believes that Facebook wants a \’dislike\’ style button to show empathy, such as a death or current events like the refugee crisis.

Facebook should and will be careful with this. The data however than can be captured from how the world feels about things in a negative way.

I believe they will be careful with this implementation and I look forward to seeing what it benefits it can bring. The main benefit for me is a reduction in ambiguity or confusion on what someone \’might\’ like in Facebook\’s algorithms. A dislike button will hopefully strengthen the signals to advertisers, resulting in better results from a campaign.
